Beginning with the welcome address by Dr. Lakdawala, ACMOMS VI just kept getting better through the day! The stage was set, and without much ado, the crème-de-la-crème of the bariatric medical community got around to discussing, sharing knowledge, debunking myths, and tackling the issues at hand, head on!
Dr. Seigo Kitano started off with discussing about the controversies surrounding bariatric surgery and Dr. Luigi followed it up with some robust guidelines and best practices that would help clear these controversies and probably set in place standard best practices for conducting bariatric surgery and recording its results and progress.
Insightful debates on weight-independent results of metabolic syndrome, surgery for type-2 diabetes, sleeve gastrectomy vs. gastric imbrication, etc. were an impactful step forward in addressing the issues and concerns of bariatric and type -2 diabetes surgery problems specific to members of the Asian community, who are genetically different from their western counterparts.

While the discussions were progressing at Taj Falaknuma, ACMOMS VI also included a Nutrition Master Class on which was attended by renowned nutritionists from around the world; with an aim to give bariatric nutrition its due importance.
Another highlight of the day was the address by senior BJP leader, Mr. Venkaiah Naidu. He shared his complete journey right from accepting his obesity, evaluating surgery as an option, enlisting the support of his family, to actually going through with the surgery and living a happier, healthier life today. He used to take 36 units of insulin twice a day and doesn’t take any today! He is a lot more energetic and feels like he is in his 30s!
Venkaiah Naidu thanked his weight loss surgeon, Dr. Lakdawala, for the support and took a very important stand by declaring that though he had earlier decided to not talk about his surgery, he was now open to talking about it on any platform. His reason for doing so was that he believes that bariatric surgery is a genuinely effective treatment, and it is not fair that it be shrouded in controversy by sceptics. He was of the firm belief that as India has reached the alarming stage of being the diabetes capital; preventing the epidemic through safe, reliable options was a necessity that cut across all party borders and politics. He saw the need to highlight successful cases and made it very clear in his address.
What made it even better was Dr. Venkaiah Naidu’s declaration that his views were not for any marketing; but out of genuine gratitude he felt towards Dr. Lakdawala and Team CODS who were doing a brilliant job in giving people a second chance at life! He was later felicitated by Dr. Aparna Govil, who was a part of the team that operated on him.
As all these discussions, debates, and addresses provided food for thought, food for the body wasn’t ignored! A splendid meal for lunch with typical Hyderabadi hospitality coupled with Taj’s impeccable service, had all the delegates looking forward to a delightful evening at the ACMOMS dinner!
All in all, Day 1 at ACMOMS VI was a great success that saw world leaders in bariatric medicine come together at a spectacular venue for sharing knowledge, learning, and experience; to collaborate for the health and well-being of people across the Asian continent.
